Recent research [ Pond (2002), Twigg, (2001), Swail and Kampits (2001), Nielson (1997)] indicates that this rapid expansion has superceded our understanding of how to plan, organize, and evaluate these programs effectively. Currently available frameworks provide general guidelines for creating programs of high quality, but they are not specific enough to be of high value in comprehensively organizing and ensuring a quality online degree program. Hence, the development of a solid and comprehensive framework for benchmarking quality of online degree programs is critical to future program growth and expansion.
This discussion is organized around four core themes. First, the authors present the status of currently available quality assessment frameworks for assessing the quality of online degree programs. Second, emerging concepts for quality assessment are reviewed. Third, the authors propose a comprehensive and utilitarian program improvement model, and the model's core concepts, structure, and focus are discussed. American Flags During the Revolution
The recent HBO mini-series John Adams depicts many historical American flags that were used during the Revolutionary War period.
These flags were early versions of the national flag and some were used by regiments during the war. For instance, in the opening credits one of the flags shown is the Culpepper flag.
This flag represented a group of about one hundred minutemen from Culpepper, Virginia. The group formed part of Colonel Patrick Henry's First Virginia Regiment of 1775. In October-November 1775 three hundred such minutemen, led by Colonel Stevens, assembled at Culpepper Court House and marched for Williamsburg.
Their unusual dress alarmed the people as they marched through the country. The word "LIBERTY OR DEATH" were in large white letters on the breast of their hunting shirts. They had bucks' tails in their hats and in their belts, tomahawks and scalping knives.
Another flag that is used during the show is the Grand Union flag. This flag was never offically adopted by the Continental Congress but it is widely recongnized as the first flag of the United States
This flag was an alteration of the British Meteor flag. In its blue canton was the red cross of ST. George and the white cross of ST. Andrew. The thirteen stripes signified the original colonies.
The Washington Cruisers flag is also another flag shown in the opening credits of the miniseries.
This flag was used by George Washington on his squadron of six schooners which he outfitted at his own expense in the fall of 1775. This flag was a variation of the New England Pine Tree flag. It was later modified and adopted by the Massachusetts Navy.
The Sons of Liberty would rally under a large tree, in Boston Massachusetts, which came to be known as "The Liberty Tree". This tree became a symbol of American independence. Knowing they were up against a great military power they believed they were sustained by still a greater power, thus their "APPEAL TO HEAVEN".

Copyright (c) 2008 Mervyn ReesEfforts to find affordable replacements to current vehicle fuel choices, biodiesel has quickly become one of the leading alternatives.Biodiesel is considered a renewable eco-friendly resource derived from vegetable oil or animal fats. Once the vegetable oil or animal fat is processed, it becomes a combustible material, like the petroleum-based diesel currently used today in many vehicles. In fact, it is used daily around the world, and is already rapidly becoming the main stay of a lot of family budgets, with ever increasing popularity.Biodiesel can and is being produced from rapeseed, soybeans, algae, palm oil, hemp, lard, mustard seed-in fact, any vegetable oil source, and yes, even waste vegetable oil, fish oil and animal fats. In fact, the August 2005 edition of National Geographic reported one biodiesel user who got his waste vegetable oil free from a local potato chip shop and spent eight dollars a month to turn it into biodiesel, which as we know is common practice now in many places.Some of the advantages of biodiesel include:* Biodiesel is an excellent way to use the vegetable oil and animal fats produced today, solving the hugely potential problem of waste products otherwise disposed of badly and the past problems that caused our environment.* Biodiesel is biodegradable on land or in water, so naturally safer for all animal and plant life.* Biodiesel is nontoxic.* Biodiesel can be safer in accidents because it has a much higher flash point (300° Fahrenheit) than regular diesel or gasoline, and is considered a non-hazardous material.* Biodiesel is a better solvent, so it cleans engines that have been dirtied and stained by long-term use of regular petroleum diesel.* Biodiesel can be used right now, in any concentration with current petroleum diesel engines, making the transfer from one to the other very easy. However, older petroleum diesel engines may experience a higher degradation of seals and gaskets which can easily be changes for modern plastic alternatives used today.* Biodiesel usage dramatically reduces carbon monoxide emissions and carbon dioxide emissions.* Biodiesel reduces sulphur emissions by 100% (because it does not contain sulphur), which will help contribute to the Kyoto protocol mandate of reducing sulphur emissions.Proponents say it may replace the fossil fuels used today to power vehicles. But it still has a ways to go:* Biodiesel just like regular diesel tends to gel at temperatures that are very low, but this can also be rectified with additives.* Biodiesel is more expensive to produce by the Gas Companies right now than other fuels currently in use (although rising costs in fossil fuel production could outstrip this problem shortly).* Biodiesel will need a lot of vegetable oil and animal fat to meet the demand, and critics suggest that land use dedicated to filling the need will be astronomical, and largely an inefficient use of land in supporting the demand.* The EPA reports that American restaurants produce 300,000,000 gallons of waste cooking oil every year, and although biodiesel can be produced from it, in the past it went to producing soaps, etc, but the cost of collecting it has caused Biodieselers to celebrate because a lot of them are happy to collect it for free.There is a lot of support in the potential of biodiesel eventually helping to replace fossil fuels. In order to generate an accurate calculation on whether it's a viable alternative or not, there are a lot of things that need to be taken into consideration. If it were manufactured on a larger scale, it may have a greater effect on price. To use a different example, it costs more-per-car to produce only one or two cars than it costs to produce 10 cars, or a hundred cars, or thousand cars. (This is why Henry Ford is hailed as a genius of the production industry, because he reduced car prices by creating an assembly line). So once the scale of biodiesel is ramped up, the cost will be more effective.The cost of biodiesel has become very affordable as a way to fuel cars and heat homes of our individual Biodieselers, however, replacing the current processing plants that take oil and turn it into fuel may be so high that it is prohibitive, and asking drivers to switch vehicles or swap engines may not be an alternative for everyone. So clearly, there will need to be a "phasing in" effect in order to increase biodiesel or other bio-fuels, thereby greatly reducing the stranglehold of petroleum-based fuels.Another factor to consider is the social cost. While many people do have the best intentions in mind to reduce emissions and waste and improve on their use of fossil fuels, people still make decisions based on their own personal impact; how much money and time will they save? There may be lots of people that are concerned about ecology, but there are so many more people concerned about whether they can afford to make the transition. Until biodiesel becomes the cheaper choice, the general public will not make the transition.

The only effect this has is to raise oil costs as people become concerned at the sensed threat of a reduce supply increases demand and so opportunists push up prices.But we are not running out of oil any-time soon. Oil sands (or tar sands) and bitumen are two alternative ways to extract oil from the ground. Again, critics suggest that this is impractical since the expense is too high, well it's that very expense that makes it possible and profitable now, and as we all know if there is a 'Buck' in it, they'll find away.But your grandmother was right about this when she said "necessity is the mother of invention." And that truth applies explicitly in this case. Assuming we run out of free-flowing oil currently in the ground, everyone (critics including) will be amazed and astounded how quickly a method is discovered to extract oil from oil sands and bitumen. Sure, the science may or may not be there now, but when billions of people are waiting at home to fuel their cars and get to work and the economy is on the verge of collapse because no one can drive anywhere, work or buy things, you can be sure that the scientists will burn the figurative midnight oil to find a solution, indeed the latest 'scuttle' is they have already started and the supply from such resources is in fact now started happening daily.The same principle will work for other alternative fuel measures. Assuming, just a few years down the road, we run out of free-flowing oil and oil developed from tar sands, scientists are once again burning the midnight oil and discover that an alternative like biodiesel or ethanol can be produced efficiently in a way that does not impinge on regular farming, but is an extra to it, thereby not threatening our food supplies as it all balances out.For 'Biodieselers', the Genie is out of the bottle, and now that we make our own fuel very cheaply, why would we ever go back?Although this sounds philosophical, humanity has an uncanny way of meeting issues head-on and addressing them through incredible scientific discoveries... but only when there is a real requirement.That old saying "Necessity is the Mother of Invention!" sure is true, so take heart and think positive, that wheel keeps turning, things will come right.
Allergic Reactions On Skin
The most common allergic reactions on the skin nowadays are atopic dermatitis, angioedema, allergic contact dermatitis and urticaria. It is the response of the immune system to different irritants and allergen causing skin disorders, which at times serious cases.
Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a skin irritation manifested by intense itchiness which has the tendency of scratching, resulting to lesions which will cause bacterial or viral infections. This would scale and flake later on. It usually affects the face, elbows, and knees. Emotional and physical stress, allergens, sensitivity to foods, soaps, pets, wool and other agents that came in contact with are the common triggers. In treating this, identifying the antigen is vital.
By angiodema, itching and redness did not take place but the allergy attack the soft tissue like the mouth, genitals and eyelids. In angioedema, you will notice the swelling in the deeper skin layers that sometimes connected with hives. One type of hives is the urticaria which is incredibly itchy and red.
Urticaria or hives is characterized by redness, severe itchiness, and swelling of the skin in different sizes anywhere in the body. It is usually triggered by scratching and pressure on the nerves, thus eradication of triggers is not beneficial on this form of allergy. However, its acute cases are usually associated with viral infections, food, drugs or latex which doesn't need medical intervention or treatment to be cured. Actually, some people with chronic hives normally experiencing it everyday.
Skin irritations and allergic reactions such as allergic contact dermatitis are triggered when the skin comes in contact with some allergic substance. This reaction starts after a day or two where the skin becomes red, itchy and inflamed. Sometimes, there may also be blisters. The most common cause for this skin irritation is poison ivy; but other plants, cosmetics, medications and metals can also trigger a reaction.
It is possible to treat allergic contact dermatitis by scrubbing the affected area with soap and water after its exposure to the allergen. Sometimes it may be necessary to take some prescribed antihistamine and cortisone medications, depending on the severity of the skin condition.
There are some herbs which are jewel weed and wild pansy that that are effective in treating skin irritations and allergic reactions. A Student Government Election Made For TV The Sequel
This day, May 6, 2008, I spot a front page headline in my local New Jersey paper, The Trenton Times that reads: Ewing H.S vote is void a second time. I had previously commented on my hometown high school's senior class elections in a prior post, so I read on.
Seven students, one black and Hispanic, five black and one white, were barred from running in their senior class elections on April 23. The reason given was that the students had missed too many meetings for school activities and had not sufficiently participated in school fundraisers.
In my previous post on this election, I commented that such requirements were unreasonable for a student election; we do not require adults to show prior experience in politics to run for public office. I added that a school should have the right to deny students a right to vote if there are serious blots on their records: academic probation, repeat suspensions and criminal activity being examples. But neither faculty nor administrators in Ewing stated that any of the candidates who were denied the right to run was in any academic or behavioral difficulty.
I stepped back after writing that post and asked myself: was it possible that some of those students were in any difficulty, but the faculty and administrators said nothing, in order to protect the privacy of the students? It would have been inappropriate, not to mention embarrassing to the students' families to mention academic or behavioral difficulties to the media.
However, if this had been the case, then a responsible teacher or principal would have sent a personal letter to the student and their parents. But, based on reading the Times coverage, I have to believe the students were good standing or that the school didn't bother to inform them that they were not. All we have from the school system is a string of "no comments," which is nothing to go on.
At the end of last week, with the support of their superintendent, Ewing High School's principal and faculty advisors declared their senior class election a Mulligan. They called for a do-over; a new election where candidates who were denied an opportunity to run the first time were allowed to run for office, although they had little time to campaign. Those placed on the ballot for the first time might have achieved some recognition from the local news coverage that would have helped, but I do not know enough to say that students who could vote in this school election read the paper.
Then today's Times reports that the do-over was botched; the vote was disallowed after the principal and the faculty advisors realized that approximately 60 students were not eligible to vote because they owed fines. I'd guess these were fines for overdue books, failure to return school property, or to pay for damages to school property. I can not imagine other reasons for a high school to fine students.
But if this was a serious concern, why didn't the principal and faculty advisors stop these students from voting in the first election? If they were serious about assessing fines, they should have been equally serious about collecting them. It's not an unusual practice for a school to hold your diploma until you pay back unpaid fines and parking tickets, though I've never heard of a case where students in arrears were denied a right to vote in a student government election. I must add that had no one protested the first election, the votes of voters with outstanding fines would have counted.
I apologize to you, readers, if you believe that I might be beating this story to death, but it's too amusing to ignore. This is the first time, I'm aware of an election where people who owed fines were not eligible to vote. As adults we have the opportunity to vote in all sorts of elections: local, state and presidential, and we retain the right to vote if we owe back taxes, parking tickets, and of course, library fines.
Now there will be a third senior class election this week. I wonder if that should be put on hold a little longer to allow the principal and faculty advisors time to consider the meaning of free elections before they set the rules for a new contest.
