A Student Government Election Made For TV The Sequel
This day, May 6, 2008, I spot a front page headline in my local New Jersey paper, The Trenton Times that reads: Ewing H.S vote is void a second time. I had previously commented on my hometown high school's senior class elections in a prior post, so I read on.
Seven students, one black and Hispanic, five black and one white, were barred from running in their senior class elections on April 23. The reason given was that the students had missed too many meetings for school activities and had not sufficiently participated in school fundraisers.
In my previous post on this election, I commented that such requirements were unreasonable for a student election; we do not require adults to show prior experience in politics to run for public office. I added that a school should have the right to deny students a right to vote if there are serious blots on their records: academic probation, repeat suspensions and criminal activity being examples. But neither faculty nor administrators in Ewing stated that any of the candidates who were denied the right to run was in any academic or behavioral difficulty.
I stepped back after writing that post and asked myself: was it possible that some of those students were in any difficulty, but the faculty and administrators said nothing, in order to protect the privacy of the students? It would have been inappropriate, not to mention embarrassing to the students' families to mention academic or behavioral difficulties to the media.
However, if this had been the case, then a responsible teacher or principal would have sent a personal letter to the student and their parents. But, based on reading the Times coverage, I have to believe the students were good standing or that the school didn't bother to inform them that they were not. All we have from the school system is a string of "no comments," which is nothing to go on.
At the end of last week, with the support of their superintendent, Ewing High School's principal and faculty advisors declared their senior class election a Mulligan. They called for a do-over; a new election where candidates who were denied an opportunity to run the first time were allowed to run for office, although they had little time to campaign. Those placed on the ballot for the first time might have achieved some recognition from the local news coverage that would have helped, but I do not know enough to say that students who could vote in this school election read the paper.
Then today's Times reports that the do-over was botched; the vote was disallowed after the principal and the faculty advisors realized that approximately 60 students were not eligible to vote because they owed fines. I'd guess these were fines for overdue books, failure to return school property, or to pay for damages to school property. I can not imagine other reasons for a high school to fine students.
But if this was a serious concern, why didn't the principal and faculty advisors stop these students from voting in the first election? If they were serious about assessing fines, they should have been equally serious about collecting them. It's not an unusual practice for a school to hold your diploma until you pay back unpaid fines and parking tickets, though I've never heard of a case where students in arrears were denied a right to vote in a student government election. I must add that had no one protested the first election, the votes of voters with outstanding fines would have counted.
I apologize to you, readers, if you believe that I might be beating this story to death, but it's too amusing to ignore. This is the first time, I'm aware of an election where people who owed fines were not eligible to vote. As adults we have the opportunity to vote in all sorts of elections: local, state and presidential, and we retain the right to vote if we owe back taxes, parking tickets, and of course, library fines.
Now there will be a third senior class election this week. I wonder if that should be put on hold a little longer to allow the principal and faculty advisors time to consider the meaning of free elections before they set the rules for a new contest.

A Hard Look at How Advanced Subjects Like Chemistry Are Viewed
It's time to discuss chemistry, algebra, mythology, and many other chosen standard curriculum and how they affect our lives (or don't). When we look at today's declining graduation rate, we love our typical scapegoats: lack of parental interaction, the internet, the economy, and so on. While the fact that these have an effect is most certainly true, perhaps we should look a little deeper.
Let's face it, people: we are in the "New Millennium." It's the 21st Century. That doesn't mean flying cars or that life needs to be like The Jetsons. It means we are in a new era, "the zeroes." The zeroes have brought about a lot of changes, both positive and negative. It depends where you look. The internet itself has had both a good and bad impact on our society as a whole, for one example. To say it hasn't changed everything, in some way or another, would be simply untrue.
So that's it, this is a new time and time for a new approach. We know this. Everyone is more open-minded than they used to be, and yet a lot of major life issues are not in good shape. Why is that?
The reason we are struggling is because we are at a crossroads in time. Perhaps it's partly placebo, but our awareness that change is possible and within our reach has sharpened. This new heightened sense of focus and optimism can help us make the changes we need in our education system.
There is no doubt that it's time to address our system. Public schools simply are not efficient. The media often repeats the mantra, "We need to pay our teachers more." Ha-as if! No, seriously, that is true sometimes, but no, that is not worth constantly repeating, if it means we are wasting time that should be spent looking at the real root of the "school problem."
It's chemistry, biology, algebra, calculus, greek mythology, and so on. What is it about this academia that is not settling right, when you look at those words? Here's a hint: look at those and consider how many of those subjects have directly helped you in your every day life? If you said more than zero or one, you are either lying or you have a very unique career. Otherwise, there is little relevance in those subjects.
Stop the press! Don't get all bent out of shape just yet! Give this a moment; there's an explanation and it is genuinely rational! The point of school is not to just provide a curriculum that teaches people to live their lives; on the contrary. (After all, it is assumed that they will learn common sense at home, best case scenario.) The point of formal education is to help children learn to, well, learn.
So yes, this is not news. We know why we have a fundamental school system, and why that is core to a civilized and rapidly advancing society. But there is an element, a crucial aspect here, that is being continuously overlooked: again, the relevance of the subjects taught in school.
There needs to be a wider variety of subjects. We need to make changes to the education curriculum, which acknowledge a few things that are very true, but again, often ignored. First of all, our children are not all learning common sense at home. We need to teach kids to change their own oil, do their taxes, balance a checkbook, get a mortgage, drive cars (teach them the rules of the road years before driver education begins), and other daily life things.
And why are we filling their heads with needless garbage like Greek Mythology? What relevance does that have? Sure, spend a week on it... but why do many public schools spend an entire semester on that? This is so backwards. We will spend a semester on Greek Mythology, a year on chemistry, four to six years on advanced math that will never be used by the vast majority of all graduates, and yet... We do not teach kids how to avoid identity theft and stay safe online. What is wrong with us???
Why are we assuming that the parents not only know everything our children need, but that they have time and are willing to teach it? The education system clearly needs an overhaul. Curriculum changes would be a start. Maybe school should be a balance of work and fun, too, if we are going to ship our kids off to there for 6 hours a day. Let's let them be kids for a bit, too.
Sure, our growing children need to learn discipline and learn to work, but they will have the rest of their lives to do that. Balance and better curriculum would make kids want to stay in school! That would resolve the decline in the graduation rate. Educators and school boards: I dare you to try these changes and see the results!

A second common technique is to look for common letter combinations in a word, which helps the child sound it out. For instance the letters "-at" and "-it" are typical pairings in children's books. It may be helpful for the child to read the entire sentence out loud, and attempt to decipher the word by its context. In the guided reading philosophy, multiple techniques are encouraged to help children with all learning styles.
Teachers may also discuss ideas such as prediction what a book is about, based on things like the title or cover illustrations. Children in a group using the guided reading philosophy may be asked to evaluate the story, and explain what parts they liked and did not like. There are many other strategies that fit into this type of program. For instance, children may discuss solutions to problems that arise in the story or be asked to predict what they think is going to happen next.
While this group of strategies may seem diverse, they all fall within a guided reading philosophy and are designed to help students improve their reading comprehension. By learning these skills at an early age, they can enjoy independent reading. Parents should learn what strategies work best with their children and use them when they are reading together at home.

A Bill to Protect Military Recruiters
I am completing Defending College Heights, a novel about an Irish Catholic family and a college administration in the aftermath of the murder of a U.S. Army recruiter. I started work on Defending because I had connections in the higher education community who were quite knowledgeable on the issues, or had worked closely with military recruiters on campus.
In my research, I went back to pro-military as well as anti-war protests against the Vietnam War. Then, and now, there were confrontations between military personnel and civilians. Most of these protests were non-violent, but others were not. Kent State, where four students were killed and nine wounded, was perhaps the tipping point of the protest movement.
Whatever we think of the war in Afghanistan or the war in Iraq, we owe our citizens who choose to serve our respect; they made their choice and they are making the ultimate sacrifice. Unlawful attacks on military recruiters or their place of work are a crime, and will not force them to change their message. If anything, they will catch their opponent's attention.
One Republican congressman, Todd Akin of Missouri, has introduced a bill, posted as H.R. 6023, also called the Freedom to Serve Act of 2008. Introduced in the House Judiciary Committee on May 12, the act prohibits certain forms of interference against military recruiting. Most are obvious crimes: destruction of property and infliction of injury being prime examples, but others are gray areas; even peaceful protest in front of a recruiting office could be considered interference and intimidation (those exact words are used in the bill).
The act proposes a 1 year prison term for first-time offenders and a term of three years or less for subsequent offense. There are state and local laws to protect persons and private property and the military abides by those laws just as civilians do. In effect, this bill makes certain forms of civilian protest, especially the more violent acts, a federal crime.
Akin has 26 co-sponsors, all Republicans, most from states that attract large numbers of young men and women to the military: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. However, while the bill lists several examples of acts against persons and property, none of these happened in a sponsor's home state. This, and the gray areas, interference and intimidation, do not bode well for the bill.
I understand the most obvious intentions of H.R. 6023, to protect the rights and property of recruiters and recruits. This bill would be a great accomplishment for a conservative Congressman to bring home to his or her district. But I am uncomfortable with those same representatives mistaking peaceful protest as interference or intimidation. A bill such as H.R. 6023 would open the door for the federal courts to make those judgments.
Whatever your political stripes, you have to agree that those who cause injury or damage property should be punished. But there is a reason why these powers, with respect to private property and personal injury, are vested with the states. The states want to set the punishment that fits the crime. They don't want the federal government to intimidate or interfere.

Tornado Fact 1. During its 3½ hour life, the 'Tri-State' tornado that passed through Missouri, Illinois and Indiana on March 18th 1925, killed 695 people along its 219 mile path making it Tthe deadliest ever tornado.

Some honey bee facts really deserved to be shared, after all so many healing and health-promoting opportunities for us humans start with this little busy creature. 2. It is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.
